Both the main parties are going to cut and both will cut savagely.

I do not think that Brown has it in him to cut savagely, he will not be able to bring himself to do what is required to rein in Government spending, he simply doesn't. He will tinker here and there, some tokenism in making the rich appear to pay and 'suffer' more and meanwhile this country will sink to going to the IMF for money, with our international credit rating in tatters and the markets and currency all falling.

He makes reference to not cutting back on 'front line' services which is a totally meaningless statement. What are front line services? and those that don't fall into this nebulous category are therefore, by definition, a non contributing part of the State, so will be in for the chop, or 'efficiency measures'.

The State is engorged due to 13 years of centralisation and State control, reversing that trend will not happen overnight, particular when/if Brown is in the driving seat.

I think we would see a complete U Turn if labour get back in. Pretty much weeks after the election, they would become the "nasty" party the tory party was branded to be. Must to the dismay of all their voters who think that labour will look after them and keep giving them more and more money.

They simply cannot continue as they are. The markets are telling them in no uncertain terms.

I agree with you Graham... they really wouldn't have any choice. But how much better it is to keep up the pretence and to leave open the opportunity to lay sole blame at a Conservative door after the election.

The tories answer to the economic crisis last year was to do nothing, and to let market forces deal with it which would have ended in disaster, young Gideon "george" Osbourne hasn't got a clue. Lets hope there is a hung parliement and Vince Cable is invited to be Chancellor.
