Natwest Bank

Options
Not too sure if this is the right place to post but would anyone shed any light on this situation...
okay, basically my husband went to his local branch of natwest to pay of some bills including my credit card bills. He has an account there and we've never had any problems before but this time one of the bank clerks refused his payments because the bills were in my name and i don't have an account with them. Is this right?

Also would anyone know if i had opened an account with them many years ago but never actually used it, would this account have been closed now?

The bank clerk was sooo rude to my husband and the thing is my husband doesn't speak much english so obviously he couldn't complain about her!

I used to work at NatWest about 8 years ago and you would be charged something like £5 to pay a bill there if you weren't a customer and if the bill was for someone else then you needed proof they had an account.

I wanted to pay money into my son's Nat West student account - some cash and a cheque. They wanted to charge me £5.

I used to work for LloydsTSB and we were not supposed to take bill payments for someone who did not have an account with LloydsTSB even if the person paying the bills did have an account. However, if the account holder paid the bills with a cheque that they had written from their LLoydsTSB account then we would accept it. (Does this make sense?)

On the subject of Natwest though, OH and I had until a couple of months ago, two joint accounts that we had held for 15 years. We had always been really pleased with them until they were taken over by RBS. They changed lots of things to RBS way of doing things which was not as good, a good example of this was the telephone banking service which used to give loads of information and then changed so it became virtually useless. I finally snapped when Natwest refused to allow me to pay my visa bill over the counter because it was not a Natwest visa and I wanted to pay it with cash. In order to pay it I had to pay the cash in and write out a cheque. After a few months of doing this I complained and was sent a photocopy of a staff handbook which said that staff should accept visa bills for account holders even if not a Natwest visa, I was told to take this in to show the cashier every time I wanted to pay my visa bill!
We have closed both accounts and transferred everything to Co-operative Bank who are (so far!) great! It has also done me a favour because I have now registered for online banking and pay bills online instead. Its done me even more of a favour actually because we have also stopped using the credit card, so no more credit card bills either!
(Sorry for the long post, I got a bit carried away!)
Incidentally, I told the rude cashier in my branch of Natwest exactly what I was doing, I was told they would get the manager to ring me but she has not bothered. In fact Natwest have never bothered to ask why we were closing our accounts, despite the fact we had them as our main bank for fifteen years.

You may find that due to public hysteria over identity theft etc. they have brought in some new polcies to try to combat it. Who knows? Although why there would be a problem with someone paying bills is another issue

When people don't get their own way they often start getting stroppy and to justify it they claim the assistant was rude .. 99% of the time when this happens it is found out that it was the customer who became irate and would not listen to what the assistant was politely trying to tell them.
