Hosting foreign students

We have two spare rooms and would like to offer to host short term foreign/exchange students. I've tried the local college website but can;t find any info there. Does anyone else do this and if so, how do we got aout getting more information?

Check inyour local papers - the schools always seem to advertise in there when looking for new host families - that's how my mum has always found new schools over the last 20years or so that she has been doing this. Or look up English language schools in your area and phone them directly

My Local University in the UK are always on the lookout for host families....in fact my son and I were hosts to a Japanese girl in August 2004 just before I went to live in Spain (my husband was already in Spain). I think we got paid about £350 for the month. Basically we had to be her mum and big brother! This was only a month's placement, but they do have need for longer ones.

I got the contact by advertising for a student lodger through the University's Accommodation Service; when I had the home visit the Accommodation Officer asked me if we would be interested in hosting.

Therefore I would approach your local Ubiversity Accommodation Unit.

Good luck....you'll find it very rewarding!

Someone I know has a small business in finding guardians and home-stay placements for foreign students coming to boarding schools in the UK. (Home-stays are mostly for half terms when the student might not be able to remain at their lodgings at school.)

If this sounds any good to you, please let me know and I will send you his details.

I hosted one of his female pupils for a week when she came up to London to do work placement, incidentally, at the firm where I work.

  • Hi,

I think if you contact your local college they would be interested in you becoming a host family.

Also try your local football club. We are currently providing accomodation for 4 footballers who are in the youth squad (16-17), they are here for about 10 months of the year monday-thursday and pay £65 each a week. Its a great way to make money, all they need is a pack up and an evening meal and we have had no trouble at all (even get in free to the odd match!)

Its worth considering if you've got the extra space. We also had foreign students before and they were no trouble either.

Good luck with it, hope you get something sorted.:j
