Can you help- cheapest rail fare. My mind is spinning!!

Need to travel Birmingham to Carlisle to collect my son (just don't ask, it's a nightmare!) on Saturday. Need to get there on the silly o'clock first train and back on the 9.08.

Cheapest way to do this please!

We have a F+F railcard, but this is only valid on the retuen trip as I won't have him with me before then!!

Looks like a "return" ticket but binning the return half on each leg (ie 1 adult retuen, then 1 adult +1 child retuen) seems stupidly cheaper than 1 adult and 1 adult+1 child singles. And thats without looking at the "times technique of buying a split journey!

What can you find for me?

Advance single on 1st train - arrives Carlisle 0901 £30.50

Advance single back on 0909 (I wouldn't risk it) or 1007 £40.40 total with railcard. £25.95 if you can wait until 1149

I really don't see where you get 'returns are cheaper' from. They are way way more expensive

virgin trains got out for £30.50 and return £37.50

have a look and play about with the times maybe you could find it cheaper hth
