Hotel charges after we have left - Urgent

Me and 5 friends had an overnight stay in a hotel on friday for a birthday. We also had a 3 course meal and a slightly hefty bar bill, we paid the bill when we checked out on saturday morning and we all thought the price they had charged was cheap but we did not question it. When we drove away we double checked the reciept and realised that they had not charged us the room rate (3 x double rooms).
Today we have had a telephone call from the receptionist of the hotel who advised us that they had not tallied the bill up correctly and they had misssed the hotel rate off. She expalined that it was an oversight and could we pay the amount owed. My friend explained that it was not our fault they had not tallied the bill up correctly so did not feel that we should have to pay the final amount. The receptionist stated that we have had a service and we should have to pay
What i want to know is
1. Do we have to pay as they have admitted it was an oversight on their part?
2. As they have our card details can they automatically take the payment?
Obviously we will pay the bill if we have to but wondered where the law stands on this
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

They're being courteous even asking you to pay, most hotels would just take the money. No doubt they'll give you a few days to cough up then just charge it to your card, which they are perfectly within their rights to do, and good luck to them.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I can confirm that we have paid and I posted on the travel forum by mistake0

Don't most hotels take the money out in advance? And take a deposit as well, to pay for any room service/minibar costs? This is my experience at least, although that's paying on a debit card, I understand it's different for credit cards.0

The only way you might possibly squeeze out of it is if you have an invoice detailing the rooms and the bar/food bills etc.
If the rooms are not on the invoice, then it's an oversight and they are entitled to seek payment using the means you have provided them with (or pursue you for it).
Either way, it could be classed as a simple error and they could see payment either way quite probably.
At the end of the day, you used a service and are required to pay for it.0 -
Hi Vikkit,
Why do you think you shouldnt pay? Is it only because they forgot to charge? Im assuming you dont think that you should be entitled to stay for free just because the rate wasnt added to the bill - do you??
Sorry just read your post stating that you paid it now. Good.:smileyhea0
