Nationwide Debit Card refused

My son who is almost 19 has had a Nationwide Flexaccount plus a savings account for almost 3 years. He has just started working after a long time searching and has been having his benefits paid directly into the account.
He went to the bank today to apply for a debit card and was told he couldn't have one because his credit score wasn't good enough and was told to try again in 6 month's time.
He's not a big spender and would fortunately rather save his money but he obviously needs a debit card for certain things. Can anyone suggest what he should do or if there are any accounts that automatically give you a debit card.
Thank you in advance.

Nationwide are nototiously fickle as to who they will give debit cards to.0

Almost banks automatically give a debit card with their bank accounts. Try banks such as Barclays, Natwest/RBS, HBOS, and LTSB.0

To the OP: your son isn't alone. I'm a higher rate taxpayer with no debts/no loans and always pay off the full balance on credit cards. I've been a Nationwide member for at least ten years and my Flex account has never gone overdrawn but they refused last week to upgrade my cash card to a debit card.

Upgrading a Nationwide cash card FlexAccount to one with a debit card is almost impossible in my experience.
Best thing to do is apply online for a new FlexAccount. I did this last year after being refused an upgrade. I was accepted immediately for a debit card and cheque guarantee card. Once the new account is all set up and everything transferred (e.g. wages, direct debits, etc), you can then close the old account.
Also, you might get the new account on 07-02-46 instead of 07-01-16 or 07-44-56, which means it accepts Faster Payments (subject to Nationwide's ridiculously low limits).
Alternatively plenty of banks automatically give 19 year olds debit cards: HSBC, Natwest, Barclays, Lloyds TSB etc.0 -

what does the amount of tax you pay have to do with anything?:santa2:0 -

Well nothing directly. It was a way of saying that I have a decent income. Would that affect a bank's decision about whether to let you have a debit card. I don't know.

Are these new measures?
I remember when i finished school in 2001 i applied for one of these accounts. I only worked a weekend each week for about 18 months after i left school & paid in money every now and then. I got my debit card 1st time no problem. Perhaps i just got lucky?0 -

It depends entirely on your account standing with the relevant institution plus any external factors that will be considered when approving your application for a debit card facility,or indeed any other form of credit facility.0 -
