electric shower or power shower from gas hot water tank?

I have been using a power shower from my gas heated hot water tank but the shower has packed up and I have had to have long luxurious relaxing baths :j while waiting on it being fixed.

It may have to be replaced entirely so I have been thinking,

I worked out that we spend about £200 per year on gas for heating the hot water. 20 kWh of gas per day on average.

10.5 kWh electric shower, 2 ten min showers per day = 20 mins = 10.5/3 * 365 = 1277.5 kWh at 10p per kWh = £127 per year max, probably less, say £100

So my dilemma, do I spend £130 to replace like for like and spend £200 per year on gas and have constant hot water as well,

or spend £200 for an electric shower and spend £100 per year on electricity and put the kettle on to wash the dishes and never have a bath again.

Unless you can fill a bath from an electric shower:rotfl:

I have a relative who can fit the shower I only need to buy the shower and fittings.

The hot water is independant from my heating, it is heated only by gas, I do not have an immersion heater.

If you know the efficiency of your hot water boiler, you can work out the relative costs.

With a highly efficient boiler it is likely to cost about a third of the cost of the electric shower - for the same amount of water used - With a highly ineffecient boiler it will cost about half the cost of electric.

Bear in mind you will use far more hot water with a power shower.

No Contest - get the gas boiler repaired!!!!

If you are used to a power shower I think you will be severly disappointed in an electric shower, you are not comparing like for like and frankly some things in life are worth paying a little extra for. I've just ripped out my 10.5kw electric shower and replaced with a shower run from unvented direct tank. Really glad to see it gone.

Have you worked out how much all those boiled kettles will cost, plus the inconvenience factor.

And sorry no way you can fill the bath with a shower.

    Get your boiler fixed!

DO NOT buy an electric shower. You will be [STRIKE]flushing[/STRIKE]trickling money down the drain and will end up screaming in frustration.

PLEASE read my post again. It is the power shower that is broken and will have to be replaced, not the gas boiler.

    Also JennyR68, ditto!

Don't count on getting a 10.5kW shower fitted for £200.

Don't forget that for a 10.5kW you will need a uprated MCB(circuit breaker) and uprated wiring as a certified electrician will not fit that shower to standard wiring and MCB. Even a 9.5kW shower is marginal.

Sorry misread - same principle, get the shower fixed.

So why would you have to boil the kettle for washing dishes and not be able to run a bath if it's only the power shower is broken?

If it's just the pump that's broken they only cost £100 and are easily changed.

Sorry the boiling kettle thing threw me.

Advice doesn't alter though, avoid electric shower if you have any other option available.

    Panic over!

Bloody electricians, even if they are relatives doing it for nothing.

You might need a new shower that one is beyond repair says relative. Another relative looks at the shower, needs new brushes he says I might have some in the van.

Fixed for nothing. Always get a second opinion.

I've got a thermostatic mixer tap on my bath which feeds the shower (and bath). Its ten times better than any electric shower.
Mine's run off an elecric immersion heater tank. No pump, just uses the pressure of the cold water coming in to get the hot out.
Will cost you the same as now (minus the cost of running the pump) and no electrics to go wrong, you just need good enough hot and cold water pressure.
