Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
We've seen hot water dispensers before - they can save you time and energy. But the Russell Hobbs Quick 2 Boil is the first one that can boil a single mug or a kettle full of water.
Russell Hobbs says the Quick 2 Boil 'makes a cuppa in seconds'. Before we send it to the lab for a full kettle test, we gave it a go in our office.
We found that this handy two-in-one appliance deserves its name. If you want just one cup, the dispenser provides 235ml of hot water in less than a minute. But if you'd like to make lots of drinks or need to boil water for cooking, you can use the kettle function.
The kettle has an average maximum capacity of 1.7 litres. It boiled a litre of water in a reasonable two minutes 27 seconds and switched off automatically. You can't use both the kettle and the dispenser functions at the same time, but we don't think you'd need to do this anyway.
The hot water dispenser is easy to use and the water is hot enough for a cuppa. It dispenses a set 235ml each time - so you'll have to use a mug, as a small cup could overflow. It's no problem to use it several times in a row as the reservoir takes just seconds to refill.
The kettle has a removable filter and the lid opens easily with a click of the release button. The kettle is not too heavy but it takes a bit of practice to get it to sit on the stand.
We didn't find the Quick 2 Boil to be too noisy, but will measure the noise level in our next kettles test.
We found the Quick 2 Boil quick and easy to use. It's ideal for singles or families as it can help you save time and energy when making single hot drinks or boiling water for a teapot or cooking.
Pros: Flexible, energy efficient, quick, easy to use.
    Cons: No volume indicator, expensive.

Does which make a recommendation with these current "one cup" kettles?

I'm intrested in one that does proper boiling water (or near enough) and which dispenses controllable/variable amounts of water
  • I like the Quick2Boil. The water is hot enough for Tea,Coffee, hot Chocolate etc.
I liked it so much I bought 2 other for my daughters.

one slight problem is that they appear to fail easily.
The first one failed as the switch on the dispenser would not click on after a couple of days. It was immediately replaced by Currys with no quibble.
Everything was fine apart from the odd half cup now and again, until a couple of days ago when my ELCB triggered, plunging the house into darkness.
By a process of trial and error we found that just plugging the Quick2boil in was enough to cause the blackout, it did not have to be switched on at the unit.
Again Currys replaced it immediately with no quibble.
Unfortunately the replacement dispenses less than 200ml every time and so will have to go back as there is no saving in multiple quick boils to get a decent size mug or cup. If we have to revert to the kettle we may just as well get a kettle!
the reason I haven't taken it back yet for an exchange is that Currys seem to be running out of them and they are not available online. May be because they keep failing or another entirely innocent explanation.
To some it up though: when it is working well it is great.

What's wrong with just putting enough water in a standard kettle for your immediate need.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Agreed, I just fill my mug with water, put that in the kettle, exactly the correct amount to make a drink, no more, no less.

    Kettle cost a tenner delivered.
  • Just putting enough water in the kettle is good in theory, being doing it for years, but in a hard water area like ours you always get the bits at the bottom so you have to put that little bit extra in and then are back to boiling more than you need.
I like to drain my drinks not sieve them through my teeth!:D

The good thing about this rapid2boil is that the water is taken from the kettle but not from the very bottom so any sediment is left in the kettle.

So my assessment is that this is a very good theoretical idea but it needs someone to put it into practical practice successfully. Or maybe we just had the Friday batch in this area.
