What to do?

I currently have a plus account with HSBC, for which I pay £12.99. I have an overdraft of £1500 which I am ALWAYS in. Now the bank charges are back, this is costing me about £75 in charges each month.

What I really want to do it close my account or at least open a new one where I can transfer my wage to and all my direct debits and then pay off a bit of my overdraft each month. I never seem to know where I am. I get paid and the first thing that happens is my overdraft swallows everything, and thats before any of my debits are paid each month.

I have only ever had my current account with HSBC!

Help please.

Same boat as me I've opened one at the Co op. My plan is that Lloyds can have a few quid each month. As the majority of the debt is from charges I hope they will accept.

Have you told your bank that you've done it?

My biggest worry was them trying to tell me I had to pay the overdraft back all at once.

  • If you are paying for extras on an account that you do not use then ditch the extras since it is costing you nearly £160.00 a year.

Wise words! Ones which I wholeheartedly support. :T

OP, contact your bank today and tell them you want the account switched to one of their free personal current accounts. They should be able to do that immediately and you should keep the same account number etc so nothing else to worry about.

That's done. Thanks for the advice.

Any idea whether they will try to close my account should I not pay my wage into the HSBC account?

I have just managed to open another A & L account which I intend to use as my main account from now on.

If the account is overdrawn and no arrangement to repay the overdrawn amount is in place then yes they can close the account.

I don't mind them closing the account. I was just trying to find out the likely hood of them demanding all the over draft back, I also have a credit card with them.

If you stop using the account completely then yes they will demand all the overdraft back.
