Goodbye old "friend".

I finally had confirmation today from HMRC (Inland revenue) that my tax bill from my self employed days is finally paid off after they cashed my last cheque for £74.71. Self employment ended on 24/08/1994. Yes, that is correct, 12 long years! This will now be carried over to another debt. So for those of you who are just starting out & feel you'll be in debt forever, this day does eventually arrive so keep your chins up.

I'm filled with admiration for you. To reduce your debt by so much in 12 years (I assume that's when it was at it's highest is brilliant. Well done.:T

Just looked at the OP 1996 is ten years ago, not twelve, either an even bigger achievement or you meant to put 1994.

A number of reasons. 1/ A very poor last couple of years where I couldn't afford to pay the previous decent years tax bills. 2/ My children were born in 1989 & 1991 & we all know how expensive they are. 3/ They allowed me to send post dated cheques for the first couple of years, so when the 6 cheques ran out, I kept not renewing them, usually cos I couldn't afford it until they sent a reminder which usually took a couple of months. It wasn't until I set up a D/D around 1998 that payments became regular. All my own mistakes I know, but all the time I was delaying payments & throughout the whole payment period, interest was being applied on the sum owed. It's frightening to think what the total interest amount I've paid is. I may work it out one day when I've got a figures head on! If it's taught me a lesson, then that is I'm not a good business person & I'm far better off being employed by a company as I have been since August 1994. Well, you DID ask!
