Standing charge

16.38p per day (£59.79 per year)
Unit charge (pence per kWh) 8.274p
I am new to electric heating, so can someone kindly explain the following please: My quote came up as £300 per year with the above details. Does standing charge means that this is what I pay per day regardless of how much I use? or not? does anyone do tarrifs like that - certain annual cost - and unlimited usage?

What would be the best tarif for someone working from home, wanting to be warm (electric heating and appliances)?

many thanks

Standing charge is a set charge per day whether you use any electric or not. If your house was stood empty not using any electric you would still pay it.

£300 a year quote for electric heating is very low. What annual kwh are you suggesting?

Which tariff suits best depends on your type of heating i.e night storage = E7.

I have electric heating but not night storage so just use a single rate tariff. Whether it is 2 tier or standing charge makes no difference if you are using it every day. Just go for the cheapest supplier in your area.

A few more details on your set up? as I said £300 p.a sounds way too low.

You will pay for what you use not what you are 'quoted'.

Hi, thanks for your help. in our flat we have no storage heaters - just electric rads. house is currently fairly well insulated, but i already bought loads of insulation, so will insulate it further soon. I only had 1 bill so far, which was just a couple of days with eon and it looks quite expensive - 0.22 per kwh and then 0.09 per kwh. We have very good double glased windows too. I would like an online tarrif, can do the reading if required, and can pay monthly or quarterly whichever is chepaest, and dont mind variable or fixed. what do you suggest? in quotes sainsbury online saver 6 seems to come up the most, r they any good?
ps. should i go for a tarrife with a standard charge (i assume the charge for usage is then lower?)
    many thansk

Well the Sainsbury/EDF online s@ver 6 is the best deal in my area and what I would opt for if changing. Only switched to s@ver 5 beginning of January though so not worth it for me. Switch only took 3 weeks.

I don't think the standing/not standing charge really makes a difference if property occupied just go for the total cheapest price.

    Hi alirob

Well done on the measures you have already taken to save energy. We may be able to help you save a bit more.

Have a look at our website (there's a link in my Personal Profile); particularly the interactive house, energy menu and Winter Advice Bureau. Lots of good energy saving advice here.

Might also benefit you to have a chat with our Energy Efficiency team. Give them a list of your appliances and they will be happy to advise you.

Ask them for a copy of a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains some really useful tips.

Are you currently on a single rate or two rate Economy 7 product?

Economy 7 is generally more cost effective where storage heaters are involved. As you don't have these, it may be a single rate tariff would be better. However, this will depend on how much electricity you use at night. Again, our Energy Efficiency team will be able to advise about this.

If you have just moved in, you will probably be on a standard tariff which will not be the cheapest.

Our website will show all the tariffs we currently have available to you. Extra discounts are available for paying with a Monthly Direct Debit and for managing your account online.

Not sure if you have already had a look at the comparison sites. If not, I would pop your details on and see what comes up, both with us and the other suppliers.

Please be aware, if you decide to change supplier, we will not give you any discount on the final bill. Therefore, it is best to time a switch away to lessen the impact of this.

Hope this is useful but give me a shout if you need any more info/advice as will be happy to help. :)

Sorry you think this DGJ. Would you mind advising why you think this is the case?

The OP is already an E.ON customer (see post 3). My intention is to try and make sure they receive the best advice possible given the info posted.

I have attempted to cover energy efficiency matters as well as trying to make sure they are on the most beneficial deal, whether this is with us or another supplier. I have actually advised them to check out other suppliers via the comparison sites.

Again, sorry if I've phrased things in an inappropriate way. If you let me know where I have fallen down, I will remove the offending bits.
