British gas closed our account with them 3 years ago, saying that it had been taken over by a company instead and they were sorry we were leaving. I called and wrote to them saying that we hadn't moved and wanted our account to stay the same, as it had been for the previous 7 years. Subsequently repeatedly told us they were trying to get our account back from the new gas company it had gone to, in the end simply telling us they weren't able to restore our account and that was it, case closed as far as thet were concerned.
Our account had been taken over by EDF, with the account name of a company in our town. When we finally discovered these details, we informed EDF they had made a mistake and we wanted our account restored to British Gas. They have failed to do this and instead switched our account to a domestic tariff and billed us for the last 3 years.
What I want to know is, can they do this? I thought we had a right to choose our supplier, and we didn't want EDF to take our account over in the first place. Any advice before I go to my expensive solicitor would be greatly appreciated!!

Can you clarify whether you are a business or a domestic customer?0
