Heating - longer but lower, or Higher temp and shorter??

Hi I have a question - is it cheaper to heat the house (GCH) switching it on for a few hours on full blast or keeping it on most day at very low. We are at home most of the time and especially this winter - it proved to be very cold without the heating being on longer than normal?

Thought you said on your other thread you had electric heating???

It is cheaper to keep it on lower for shorter periods of time as you can get away with.

Turning it on higher for the same shorter periods OR keeping it on low but for longer periods will both cost more. Keep an eye on the meter and choose whichever pattern strikes a balance between being 'economic' and 'comfortable'.

The hotter your house is the more heat it'll lose to the outside over time, the better your insulation the less heat you'll lose to the outside over time.

Hi Jenny,

Well we have the main house which is heated by gas and 2 flats on the same site which have electric heating only. so am trying to check what options are better for both.

That is a question that cannot be answered!

It is like asking is it quicker to drive from London to Glasgow at a slow steady speed without stops, or flat out and have long stops!!!!

Depends on how slow is the steady speed, how fast is flat out and how long are the stops!!!
