I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which is giving an error code M1004 at boot up. I believe it is something to do with over heating. Any way to get rid of this?

Seems unlikely to be over heating - "on start up". DELL error codes are available on their web site or try sending them an e mail."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The fan might not be starting, so it is related to potential overheating.
Search the Dell forums for the possible causes and answers --> http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/search?ticket=awPdErnl7X70_-1&submitted=true&q=M10040 -
