I phones up to cancel mine last week, purely because I could no longer afford it, as an enticement to stay they offered me the home relay free of charge, thereby reduding my bill by £38.00.

Also offered to cancel home relay and reduce the joint membership which obviously reduced it further (can't recall how much TBH), because when I explained that this cover was for our motorbikes and the times we have used them they have never been able to fix at roadside and so the relay was important.

Still had to cancel it, although it took me half an hour to explain that due to a drop in wages £100 odd out of a £180 wage was just too much for me.

After reading another thread I thought I would give these guys a try:-

Haven't a clue how good they will be. But as was said in that thread there is nothing too drastic in the reviews and comments I can find.

breakdown cover by equity red star £29 this is why so many vehicle recovery operators are going bankrupt.
  • Check the price on their website as a new customer - it could well be lower than the price offered to an existing customer over the phone. The year before last I cancelled my AA membership and signed up as a new customer online, via Quidco to get £50 cashback as well.

This year I've signed up to the RAC to see what they're like....

I had my AA renewal through today. We have a joint policy covering roadside and relay, the renewal was quoted at £138.50, so looked online at their site and the same cover was £88.49! One quick phonecall and the renewal cost became £88!! I remember doing the same thing last year. I suppose they think people will just accept the figure they send!

I can't remember amounts but I only had Roadside, was going to cancel and take out cover elsewhere covering me rather than the car, and adding Relay, phoned up and said I wanted to cancel; they it changed to me no problem and got the Relay for free. The only problem is it's been 7 weeks and I havn't received my new card yet!

I couldn't believe that my Roadside renewal is £68.00, £50 if I re-set-up the direct debit.

Cancelling anyway (got 12 months cover including home start, relay, etc with my new car)
  • This is common practice for the AA to charge current members a higher rate as they rely on customer loyalty. If you threaten to leave they will do anything to keep your business and stop you from going to the opposition (they also have a retention target to keep). Once your premiums have been reduced you will be badgered to buy further AA products such as insurance, warranty and now chargeable breakdown services. The AA are having financial difficulties right now, patrols are threatening to strike in the next few weeks as their pensions are being reduced lower then the value they are contributing. They have a very motivated sales team who will try to persuade you to have a chargeable service done by them. I know as I was working for them until recently and it has changed a great deal in the last year
