Hi folks, hope you'll all be patient with this "newbie".
problem I have is none of the banks will let me open a bog standard a/c from which I can pay a couple of direct debits. Have explained that I don't want credit facilities/chequebook etc., makes no difference, still declined!
Without boring everyone with detail, my credit history is shot to bits, nothing extravagent-less than a grand. However can't do much about it at the moment
& even less so having to buy postal orders for car insurance & things which can't be done at post office/paypoint systems.
Does anyone have a solution to this please?. Thanks for your time

You won't get a bog standard account, but you should get a basic bank account
Co-Op Cashminder
Nationwide Basic Bank Account NOT the FlexAccount
NatWest Step Account
And others in that first linkWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
just a thought, as some people are being declined even a basic account. Natwest do an instant access savings account called first reserve, this comes with a solo debit card. It is branch based so anyone can open one and there is no credit score at all. Maybe you could get one of these and pay those bills over the phone with the card?
Solo cards are becoming more widely accepted now and most companies take it (accept mattalan!).
Edited to add link. http://www.natwest.com/personal02.asp?id=PERSONAL/SAVE_AND_INVEST/SAVINGS_ACCOUNTS/INSTANT_ACCESS/FIRST_RESERVE0 -
Nationwide Basic Bank Account NOT the FlexAccount
Sorry to thread hijack here ... so the Nationwide Flex Account is not actually a basic bank account?
Just I was rejected for a Nationwide Account and I did ask for a basic one, but at application stage I am sure the bank clerk mentioned the term "flex account" ... I wonder if I should give them a ring and clarify0 -
Check this link ... Nationwide Basic Bank Account
But go right to the bottom of the page - it's not obvious until you get the bottom but .... no the Flex Account is NOT the basic account. Naughty marketing by NationwideWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Even naughtier! Just spoke to Nationwide, two seperate advisors have told me that their basic account is their Flex Account! lol
I have been declined for their Flex Account because I didnt meet the credit scoring criteria .. and I was like no sh*t sherlock thats why I am applying for a basic account0 -
Basic accounts are not really credit scored - although some banks might0

Well I applied for two basic bank accounts recently and both we're credit scored.

Any banks which offer basic accounts with a Solo or an Electron Debit Card are credit scored. Banks which offer basic accounts with just a cashcard like Halifax Easycash are not.0
