HPI check shows outstanding finance... on another car

Options
A friend of mine pruchased a Mini 2 years ago but never thought to do a HPI check when he bought it. :(

Fast forward to now, he's looking to sell the car but is having trouble as HPI shows outstanding finance to Black Horse. However the interesting thing is that the finance details say that it's for an E46 BMW 3 series. The finance was taken out a year before my friend bought the car. He's tried to contact the people he bought the car from but it appears that they have moved away from their previous address and can't get in contact with them.

Is this likely to just be an error and will it be simple to get Black Horse to remove this record from the HPI?

If this isn't an error, where does my friend stand legally?

Thanks in advance

It'll probably be a clerical error. Some dim bint at HPi was probably too busy doing her nails instead of her job...

Has it had a private plate on it before?

Some lenders record against the VIN and the Reg No. so the finance can still stick around!
  • Yes, apparently the car has had two different private plates on it before and it's on the original plate now.

I'd give Black Horse a call and see what they say. Don't give too many personal details away though as they might start chasing your friend up for the payments on it...
