Bit of advice needed!

Hi,

My work just provided me with a laptop and mobile broadband USB thingy so that I can use my laptop when on the move.

My question is... can they check...

a) Where I'm at...
b) What I'm doing/surfing on the computer?!

Many thanks!

they probably won't need to. There's a very high chance that you won't be able to access the net due to a policy on there; you may only be able to access the internet when connected to the network, either by cable, wireless or VPN

unless the laptop has a built in tracker then no they won't be able to see where you are.

    Hi scheming,

I can get internet using the USB broadband dongle - I can't connect to any of the company's servers but I can surf the net and check my e-mail.

Would they be able to check what I'm doing though - either through their own records or via the ISP?

it is possible to locate people via wireless network, the accuracy varies from a 100 foot to 1km or so depending on the number of masts in the area

by default mobile broadband does not offer tracking facilities nor do ISPs give this information out (but they do log it), it is possible that there are special business mobile packages that could do this but i have not seen one

it is also possible that a third party package could log locations and browsing habits

By default IE does log all your surfing habits and writes hidden files of what you have been up to

the easiest way to stop leaving tracks on your computer is to ccleaner

Why not just assume they can and save yourself any hassle in future for misusing company resources?

I would say just be careful what you do on it as it is a company PC they could recall it at anytime for someone else to use etc an example could be when your on holiday. I would get yourself a memory stick and save any personal stuff on it as some jobsworth may report you for using it for own personal use and this could be used to dismiss you very easily and quickly, in these times of job security we need to protect ourselves dont we. Also l'm not sure but if the company has a contract with Dell for example for repairs you may invalid date any warranty if a personal issue caused problems (not sure if that makes sense)

Have you signed an internet usage policy?

Just make sure the browser is set to clear the cache and cookies etc at shutdown

If you work for MI5 or IBM or suchlike, then they may want to track you. If you work for some company selling bath plugs, then I doubt they will be intrested in tracking your where-abouts or net usage
