Which iron? Hard water area

Well another iron bites the dust!! I have (had!) a morphy richards jet steam steam generator and it's died a death on me tonight. Just pouring water out of the steam jets, and it's less than 2 yrs old :mad:.

Any recommendations please???

Contact Morphy Richards direct just because it is two years old, and outside the guarantee period does not mean you can't complain. There is something about appliances being covered for up to six years. I'll try and find the reference for this.

If you decide to go for a new one - No iron is designed for hard water areas so you have a number of options.

    1) Get a steam generator iron but make sure you drain off the reservoir after each use if using tap or simple boiled water from the kettle.

    2) Get a decent steam generator iron but only use distilled water (some car accessory shops sell this in 1 gallon quantities). But still drain off the reservoir regularly.

    3) Buy a medium or high quality conventional steam iron with a self-cleaning function.

    4) Buy a cheap steam iron and replace as required. - and never leave water in an iron when it is not being used.

    Found It!

Sale of Goods Act - You have six years to take a claim to court for faulty goods in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; in Scotland you have five years.

If you have or can get hold of from a friend, the water from a condensing tumble drier, this is effectively distilled water so its a cheaper way of getting hold of it than buying it. Given that its normally just tipped away its easy enough to keep a bottle around to fill up.

Boil some white vinegar with water put in a bottle and use that for ironing it keeps scale from building up
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I'm thinking that I might try descaling it later. Kill or cure!! And it's pretty dead already..........

We live near Swindon and the water is awful!!!

Our iron states that you should use distilled water to prevent scale - obviously we don't... but we have changed to a steam generator iron and to be honest it seems to be lasting a lot longer than the previous ones. They are expensive to buy but I do think they are worth it as they cut down the ironing time!

    Hi

A Polti steam generator iron - can't beat it. The tanks have a special coating to help prevent lime scale build up.
