Negotiating with dealers

I guess its a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.
I've seen this car I *really* like - but its too much and appears over priced, and i'm wondering how much dealers are likely to negotiate on price (if at all)?

Its a Fiesta 1.4 Silver from 2004 (04 plate). Full leather and alloys. Low mileage for age (40k). 1 owner from new. But being sold for 5 grand!
Its a independent local dealer. I'm wondering if i got £4,500 in cash and said "I will take it off you now" might work?0 -
You're right a piece of string! My two pennies are that if you go in prepared to make a decision on it there and then and with a figure in mind to pay the chances are that they won't let you walk out without dealing. Any sale is better than no sale, especially if you know what you want and there is little mucking around.:j

No they will negotiate UP from 4.5 start BELOW where you want to end up.0

cross-typed - if youre sure its overpriced then go lower - £4000 and work your way upto £4500 if thats what you want to pay, otherwise stand your ground with the £4500 and be prepared to pay and take quickly.:j

On paper I think its only worth 4 grand, perhaps slightly less. But dealers are always more expensive, are they not?
Not only do I like the car, the dealer is a 5 mins walk down the road... so its very convenient as well for me to go back and collect it.0 -

Really?! Have you found many with leather...?0 -
I saw a classified ad on ebay from a trader, exactly the same car and plate, for 4495, with less mileage. Which makes me think that 4500 is probably slight more than I should pay!0

This may or may not help you but I found the following on Autotrader although obviously they might be nowhere near where you live!

This is *exactly* like the one I saw down the road to me!0 -
It's easier to knock money off private sales in general. Probably best just to stay calm and relaxed, you can show interest in the car but don't make it seem like you must have it. Maybe start off making a half reasonable offer, say £4k-ish. I'd be very surprised if they'd take that so work up from there and ask for extra's to be thrown in. I knocked about £500 off the price of mine, although it was listed at a more expensive £9950. Found out it had originally been put up for £13,500 a few months earlier so not sure if they made much money on it .0
