What to do with house contents you don't want?

  • Hi,
Some of the auction houses in our area( Mid Wales borders)will apraise for free, some of the rural landlords I know would bite your hand off for the wood burner!
Some house clearances will offer next to nothing and then take them to the same auction house that will apraise for nothing,I have seen this in person!
I agree with the other poster about freecycle, and free ads in the paper as well.
    Good Luck
  • Thanks all great advice and thanks for your understanding of the sensitivity around this subject.

When i had to sort out my Mums most went to Age Concern, some went the dump and i phoned the local womens refuge, for battered wives who had left home with just a binbag and asked them what they wanted, everything from a couch to womens things.

  • Even a cr*ppy old chaise longue in need of upholstering will find a buyer. If it's good quality it will be worth the work and expense of having it done. A pal of mine bought what looked like an absolute wreck but after a visit to the upholsterer and a couple of hundred quid it's a beauty and looks like it would cost a fortune. Which it probably would now if only you could find one

I second the suggestion of having a local auction-house round. At least then you'll know whether there's anything worth selling, rather than giving stuff away.
  • I agree definitely with the charity route...but you must also understand that this isn't your 'normal' house contents!!!! No nice 3 piece suite 10 years old or mod cons like iron/microwave etc or half decent bed frames. It is thinks like roll top desks and old in need of upholstering chaise longue and wood burning stove etc etc. I shouldn't think there are any appliances under 15 years old in there.

Lots of upholsterers would like a chaise longue to do, ebay?? And second hand woodburners sell. Roll top desk sounds good for saleroom.

    Enjoy the house.

Anyone know how much the fee would be for items the BHF can't sell?A
We have 1 single bed, 1 wardrope, 3 side tables with draws, 1 chest of draws, 1 sofa, 2 armchairs and a big cabinet. Also pots & pans.

We are doing a house swap and aren't taking much with us, most of it is old, the wardrope has been painted pink (yuck!).

I've noticed that some charity shops are getting wiser about collectible items. The obvious one is Oxfam with their specialist books and music shops. However, I was in my local Age Concern charity shop the other day and one of the assistants was showing off what looked like a Wade Whimsy china figure which was apparently worth over 40 quid. I got the impression that most donations were checked for their value by someone who had a vague idea of what was collectible.

Im amazed at how much charities sell things for....Good Luck to them....I donated a 5yr old bed which I had bought as a display model for £199 to BHF....a few weeks later I got a letter from them thanking me for my donation which had raised £300.....They did offer me the proceeds minus a handling fee but I turned it down.

Did they ask you to complete a gift aid declaration?
