New Samsung HDD keeps disappearing.. ideas?

Hi all, recently purchased a Samsung Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen (HD154UI) internal hard-drive, and it's been formatted fine and all required backup data copied across.
Thing is, every so often it seems to disappear from my list of available drives in 'My Computer' (I'm running Windows 7).
If I reboot, it appears, but then seems to disappear until next reboot.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks lots.

Is the Samsung drive the only drive in the machine, or is it a secondary/slave drive? It could be that the drive is switching to standby (since it's an Ecogreen) if it's not been accessed for a specific time (10 mins I think) and then W7 no longer sees the drive when it has switched to power saving mode. What settings do you have on the Windows 7 machine for power options/standby?0

Hey, thanks for replying.
It's a secondary drive, on a fresh install of Windows 7, so whatever default power saving profile applies.0 -
I have a Samsung external drive (Story 1TB) which conatins a full size Samsung EcoGreen HDD. The drive does go into powersave mode if it isn't used but the drive never disappears from the list of available drives (tested on XP SP3) and will power up if I click on the drive.I can only think of two possibilities, your drive is faulty and is switching itself off completely when it's unused, or (more likely) Windows 7 treats the drive as disconnected/unavailable when it enters into powersaving mode. I searched online for updated firmware for your drive and was unable to locate anything.
I found this forum post which is similar to your issue and seems to point to W7: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/59507-my-2nd-hdd-missing-after-standby.html
If you edit the power saving options to never turn off hard drives does that make any difference to the Samsung drive availability?0 -
do you have anything on the drive yet0

just had a quick look about and found people who had this problem solved it by putting the OS drive on sata port 0 or 1 and the storage drive on 3 or 4
if I was you I would put your main drive on 0 or 1 what ever is lowest on your board
and put the new drive on the highest port number see what happens
worth a try0 -
Hi all, I've edited my power saving settings to not allow my HDD's to go to sleep, and that's sorted it for now. More of a bandage and less of a fix I understand, but should do the trick until I have more time to look into it.
Thanks again, your help... helped!0
