what are proxy settings??

The proxy server is refusing connections

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

* Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
* Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.

Would this be the cause of my earlier problem with IE8 not displaying and saying Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

  • Hi Balloo,
in IE goto tool Internet Options/Connection/Lan Settings see if it say use a proxy you should take it off.
Similarly for FF tools/options/advanced/Network no proxy .
If there is one in either let us know what is set to.

Are you on a work or university connection, or anything similar? If you're not, then you probably don't need any proxy settings so try clearing them as advised above.

If you are, contact the network administrator for advice, as you will need the specific details of their proxy server.

Just had a thought after re-visiting your other thread , are you using another pc to post on here, and if so is it using the same broadband. Check the proxy settings on that one too. It is possible since you were not aware of proxy settings before hand something might have set it without you knowing. Plus I thought you did not want to change to Firefox if you have downloaded that today it will have picked up your settings from IE when installed. Just trying to find out what could be causing causing the last 2 days problems ;)

  • If it is the kosher TOR then its for anonymous browsing , which is more or less I can tell you at the mo. However has someone used your PC to configure ?
But for now does IE and FF now work ?

  • I know the feeling, if you want to be certain that you have nothing lurking on your pc it might be worth trying and running Malwarebytes to see what it can find.
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ma..._anti_malware/

Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'.
After its updated go to SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds.

Depending if it finds anything someone more technical than I will be along at some time .
