Conservatory Heating

Hi I googled the site and found that some moneysavers were using air conditioning to heat a conservatory - I've looked at B&Q and this seems to be a good product but there are no details - anyone any experience of the product or using aircon units for heating?

  • I would not recommend anyone heating a conservatory because it will be expensive to heat being nearly all glass.
however if you really want to heat your conservatory i recommend a portable gas heater and use it only when you use the room

you need to post and search the lpg and heating forum:
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=78

Using an air conditioning unit or heat pump will have running costs comparable or better than mains gas. But it may cost you £'s to install.
You have to justify that by the more pleasant environment and how long you want to occupy it for.

The "through the wall" unit is awful. It is noisy and very bad at maintaining a steady temperature. Also, you cannot set the temperature below 18C on heating - and in reality 18C was more like 20C which meant excessively heating the conservatory, or not at all through the Winter. I was glad to see the back of mine and now have a fan convector running from the CH system (which in itself is run from an air to water heat pump).

Also, with regards not heating a conservatory - rubbish! Mine is heated, it isn't costly to keep it heated and it means I gain a much needed extra room for little monthly cost.
  • My brothers conservatory always feels much colder than the rest of his house despite having a radiator so that proves there is a lot more heat loss there.

I don't deny that and anyone would expect there to be, but to not use the room for the sake of a few £ extra in heating bills would be a crime. Why pay all that money for a conservatory to not use it for 6 months of the year - makes no sense to me? If you can afford £10K+ for a conservatory, then I wouldn't have thought that even an extra £1 a day to heat it was going to break the bank.

Thanks for air conditioning advice, sounds a bit too noisy and not really appropriate for our needs - any ideas for economical heating, an oil radiator or convection heater have been suggested but not sure which is the cheapest. Thanks

Can you get pipes out there from your heating system?

By far he cheapest method of heating would be a fanned convector heater (Smith or Myson both make them). The Smiths "Ecovectors" are particularly good. Not noisy and kick out a lot of heat when needed. These plumb onto your central heating system, so effectively heat using gas, which is a third of the price of electric heating and comparable to a heat pump (or A/C) system.

Hi No apparently, a conservatory has to have independent heating. :(

Thats exactly whati think. I can afford the maybe £1 aday to heat it
and we use ours every day and enjoy it.

The extra enjoyment far outweighs the cost of a convector heater with a thermostat and a timer turns on for us on a morning, warm enough to have breakfast in, bliss.
