Bleaching bath sealant

Options
Hi all, not sure if this is silly or irrelevent (or even in the right place) but our bath sealant keeps getting clumps of black mould, i'm forever bleaching it but doesn't seem to do much. We can't remove it as we rent....any ideas please.

The mould is caused by damp, and if you have a very damp bathroom (eg one with no outside window) then you're on a bit of a hiding to nothing.

If you have an old towel lying around the place, you could make a point of rubbing it over the sealant every morning or evening to dry it off - if you dry it every day the mould shouldn't get a chance to grow...hopefully!!! You'd need to have bleached it first, once and for all, obviously...

Not exactly OS, I know, but if you've heard of Flylady, she advocates the "Swish & Swipe" method of bathroom cleaning, where you swish round the loo with a loo brush and a bit of old shampoo every morning, and swipe all the surfaces with a disposable wipe or a cloth. Takes 45 seconds. I use Lidl's hygienic surface cleaners and use one wipe to swipe basin, taps and bath (no, really!). Seems to have knocked the mould on the head! But I'm sure a wet cloth followed by a dry towel would work just as well. Good luck!

unfortunately not old style, but this is where the brands of mould and mildew remover really do come into their own. Not only do they clean the stuff off easier, but they also seem to prevent it coming back quite so quickly.

Thanks for feedback, the bathroom is actually very dry, with no other mould except on sealant and where it meets tiles....will try your tips....thanks again

Generally people have said that in the end the only real option is to remove all the old sealant and replace it.

There are special black mould resistant sealants available these days. Places like B&Q are bound to stock it.

Dettol's Mould and Mildew Spray removes all the black mould. You just have to make sure that the plug is covered with a cloth when you spray it because it tarnishes the metal.

Unfortunately, after repeated use, I can confirm that it also rots the sealant and eventually the only solution is to remove and replace. It's a pig of a job too.
