    Conversley....

My friend and I attended a motorsport meeting 3 weeks ago near Scunny, and on the way back down the M180, the gearbox on his 2 year old Vectra estate, (Co.car.) packed up, along with the flywheel.

He rang the RAC, and the call was answered within about 10 rings, and they arrived to tow us off the motorway in 35 minutes.

Oh and by the way, this was a Saturday night.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

Is it because you are a female you expect better service? should you take priority over a man broken down on the hard shoulder which is certainly a dangerous place to be, why do you think a motorway service area so unsafe, and why you felt vulnerable.

Regarding the conversation concerning your choosen occupation and why you would like to be called Doctor is beyond me, a job title is the least of someones concerns, unless one feels, one is special. The call centre were busy and the service you received was ok, and similar to what the poor people receive.

I suppose you could compare this to the service you receive ringing a medical doctors surgery and one sits and waits in a queue to be told by an over protective poorly trained and ill manner, uncaring receptionist, not that someone will see you in 75 minutes, but possibly a week, welcome to reality.

I'm not really that fussed about being called Dr - it's just that I stopped using Mrs when my ex walked out on me. I do, however, find it rude for someone to question whether I was who I said I was because my gender didn't match his concept of my title.

The service area was just closing as we arrived. That is, the lights were on and you could go in and use the toilets, but all the rest of the facilities were closed and the only staff were just leaving. Yes, the car park was lit, but lighting doesn't provide safety if there aren't any people. I agree that if the services had been staffed, and there had been somewhere we could sit, I wouldn't have felt particularly vulnerable.

I don't expect better treatment for being female. I do consider a female alone with two small children to be more vulnerable late at night than an adult male.

The 40 minute wait wasn't bad, and if I had been told it would be 40 min, I'd have been happy with that. But I was told it would be 75 min, and that seemed a long time.

By far the biggest part of my complaint is the 20 min that it took me to get a human being on the phone - which would apply to anybody trying to phone in. I've belonged to the RAC for the best part of 20 years, and at other times of day I've always got through quickly. I don't consider "it's Saturday" to be a good reason for such a long delay. It's not as though I was sitting comfortably at home trying to get some non-urgent information. Do you think it would have been acceptable for your hypothetical man on the hard shoulder to have to spend 20min trying to get through?
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

AA and RAC continue to have great patrols but they are the shop front for increasingly shoe-string funded back offices that are their to create profit for their corporate owners, not satisfaction for their "members". Don't buy an expensive brand in the future.
