Sky Plus Box

My Son has the Sky basic package as he is in an area that is unable to receive a TV signal unless he has Sky.
When I enquired about the free Sky Plus Box I was informed this costs £49 +£60 set up fee.
Would it be better to buy a Digital Recorder myself from the High Street and will this be compatible with Sky?
Any advice appreciated.

a DVR would be one solution, but the advantage of a Sky+ box is being able to watch one channel whilst recording another and being able to "pause" live TV e.g. when the phone rings.

  • I do not have Sky and have bought a Humax Digital Recorder and I can record two programmes whilst watching a third.
  • Bear in mind that Sky don't actually supply the Sky+ boxes anymore. They only supply HD boxes now, but they don't require you to take the HD sub.

HD boxes require 2 feeds from the dish to fully use its functions. It's one feed per channel. They can run on only one cable, but obviously you can't record one channel and watch another.

If he is out of contract with sky (contract is normally 12 months) then he might want to ring up saying he wants to cancel and they will put him through to disconnections.

If they ask why he wants to cancel just say that you just don't get the chance to watch the programs he wants to due to work etc etc then they tend to mention the option of sky+

They might initially say £49 + installation, but just um and ahh and tell them you can't afford or it seems expensive but you might consider it if they make a better offer, hopefully they will.

I got mine for free.;) although sometimes they might be stubborn and offer to wave just the installation, but that's still better than wasting £60.
  • Thank you so much!!!!!
I threatened to cancel and was offered a box for £30.
    Thanks again!!!!
