It depends, are you disabled or a parent? There is something about being your final year too.

The last loan installment is bigger and therefore, should last you over the summer.
Yes, I am a parent, but am not entitled to HB as I have a mortgage. Also, my last loan instalment is the same as the other ones - £470. Surely that can't be expected to stretch over 4 and a half months?

I think for Scots they expect you to save up throughout the year, but with monthly payments barely covering rent for some people this isn't really very likely. The three installment system was much better, in my opinion.

Have you looked for jobs outwith your area? Perhaps look at places with high staff turnover such as call centres, fast food places, etc.
  • Yes i'm worried about this too.

What i did last year was apply to internships that were being held by my own university. I got a place on one of them and it ran for 8 weeks and netted me £2,000. You can get a regular job (if you're lucky enough to find one) say in an office/warehouse/call centre that will pay you a bit more than that, but this was far more interesting and good money either way for a student.

See if there's anywhere in your uni that they have placements within the uni over summer, if you're going to be local. If not then they at least should have someone or a department that is in charge of placements and the likes. They might be able to get you something more interesting or relevent to your studies, moreso than a 'regular' job would be anyway.

The summer break always has been long, but used to be early/mid June to late September with only a fortnight at Easter.

Southampton have a 4 week easter break! I was livid!

I finish at either Easter if I have no summer exams. Or a few weeks after Easter. We start early at Staffs, mid September (rather than Late Sep/Early Oct) so the whole first semester is done by xmas.

As for summer work, check out where the students are at the moment, obviously they all go home so need replacing.....

I am on placement and my contract got extended until Aug 5th, very very happy :)

End of May to the end of September at my uni. Two weeks for Christmas and two weeks for Easter, plus one reading week in the first semester but not the second any more.

If you can't find a job, there is always the access fund. I'm not sure how much you'd recieve but it sounds as though every bit will help.
