Do you have contents insurance? if so, ring them up....you will probably need to send in a list of what was in, but they often send Iceland vouchers or something like....;)

And are you on Freecycle in your area? If so, post a Wanted.....fridge freezer message. You'll be surprised at how people will help out.

First up - take a deep breath.

Is the food actually ruined, or just defrosted? Is there anything salvageable from the mess? Is there anything you can cook off? Remember, frozen un-cooked foods can often be cooked and either kept chilled or re-frozen.

Second - how long a period do you have to cope until you can afford to buy more food? A few days? A few weeks? A few months.

Third - what food do you have in your cupboards? Tinned beans, dried pasta etc? Take it all out and make a list of the things you do have.

Fourth - take the list of all of the things you do have (even the manky tinned pilchards and so on) and post an SOS on the Moneysaving Old Style board http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=33 where culinary wizards who can make a meal out of anything reside. You may end up with some odd combinations, but you won't starve.

  • Just wanted to echo Katrina really- are you sure ALL the food is ruined? can some be salvaged if you cook it straight away?

Are you anywhere near London/Hertfordshire? I am just about to put a fridge freezer on freecycle. I have one, my partner had one when he moved in and the new house has one. Way too many fridges for my OS shopping.

I second the contents insurance post, do check this out. Our freezer defrosted big time last year, so without much hope I rang my insurance company... TMuch to my surprise they allowed me a claim for all the food (I think they based the estimate on size of freezer), which was enough to pay for a new freezer. But if you can get a freezer from Freecycle, the all the insurance money can go to pay for re-stocking.

Thankyou so much to all, great advice. I have managed to salvage some of by cooking it like the meat, but I have also lost alot of stuff. I'm gona dig my home contents insurance to see if i'm covered but i have a feeling i was to tight to bother with it lol.

Two weeks till next pay comes through but have some food in the cuboards it is amazing what you find in the back of your cuboards when you have a look. We'll be ok I have a couple of good friends that will help me out if not.

Toto, I live in Norwich and have no transport but i'll have a look on freecycle now never even heard of it-what a great idea!

    See ya xx
