My mum used to read a chapter of Enid Blyton every night to me and my brother, sitting on the landing between our bedrom doors. Our favourites were the series of The Castle/Valley/Sea etc of Adventure, with Kiki the parrot? I was so desperate to know what happened next, I would sneak out of bed afterwards and try to make out enough words to figure out the story! I could read them independently by the time I was 4, and have to credit Enid Blyton for that entirely :)

I got the trilogy in one book from amazon and it still has the original names etc. would have been very upset to buy it and find it changed!!

I was also desperate to go to boarding school - i loved mallory towers but my favourite was 'the naughtiest girl in the school' :)

I used to love Milly Molly Mandy and Mr. Pinkwhistle! Happy days.......
"Buy me, Lady", said the frock, "and I will make you into a BEAUTIFUL & WHOLE & COMPLETE human being".
"Do not be silly", said the Man, "for a frock alone cannot do that".
"True", said the Lady, "I will have the shoes and the bag as well".

My DD (6) has just finished mr pinkwhistle and loved it she's know reading the 'bedtime story book' (full of little stories) we bought the whole set for £2.00 at our local charity shop they've never been read which I find quite sad!!

I was a huge fan of MMM too: I found a set of books with Joyce Lankester Brisely's original drawings in when DD was tiny. wonderful!

The Magic Faraway Tree series are by far my favourite books of all time! I still have my very worn copy from the seventies of the Magic Faraway tree but I also have a new hardback of all three. At one point they changed the kids names- I know Joe Bessie Fanny and Connie aren't very 'noughties' but they shouldn't be allowed to change these classics!

I can't believe they changed the names:eek: it just wouldn't be the same for me. I loved these books as a child, and can't wait till I have children so I can hopefully share my love of these books with them. I too credit Enid Blyton with my love of reading, and am laughing at how so many of us longed to go boarding school after reading those books:rotfl: (though i confess i think it was the four marys that fuelled that desire more:o)

I loved the magic faraway tree as a young kid and read the secret seven and the famous five.

however I am reading the naughtiest girl to my dd who is just six and I find I am having to paraphrase a lot of the time because the english is just so poor.

dd is enjoying it even if it does contain a lot of the "jolly hockey sticks " language
