BT 1571 - to clarify WHEN to make chargeable calls

Apologies if this has already been discussed. (I have searched)

I made a discovery today by calling BT to clarify the exact nature of the 2 chargeable calls I have to make every month in order not to incur a monthly £1.50 charge for their 1571 service.

As I get my BT bill in the middle of a month ie 16th December, BT require me to make my 2 calls from mid month to mid month ie. 16th Dec - 16th Jan etc etc

I've wrongly assumed I had to make the 2 calls in each calender month.

Maybe this has been obvious for others. If not, I hope this helps.

They do not need to be chargeable, they can be inclusive (i.e. free).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I did read that somewhere, so specifically checked that with BT today & was told 'no the free calls don't count'.

I think, for myself, I will make those 2 (paying) calls to be on the safe side.

Oh dear, you spoke to a BT 'advisor' didn't you?

What you were told is completely wrong. BT Customer Service have been peddling this view for some time and it is totally impossible to get them to accept otherwise. BT basically deals in telephone calls so for their representatives not to know the difference between chargeable and non-chargeable calls is like a greengrocer being unable to differentiate between apples and oranges.

Your free calls are free of cost to you but not free of charge. The charge is 0p per minute. They are chargeable. They appear on your bill.

As you wish, but you are paying for the two calls when they are made at weekends - 0p per minute to be precise. Inclusive has no bearing on this; it does not mean "free" and is the telecommunications equivalent of a red herring.

    Thanks for that.

They are infuriating. I will try for one 'month' not making anything other than my 'free' calls & then see if I'm charged. Thanks again, I'm off to bed, had enough.

I make nearly all my calls over weekends via 1280, usually around 50 a quarter and the only calls routed via BT, all 0p and I have never paid the charge.
