just bought an astra 1.7 dti for a very good price but it has a problem. when the power steering is fully turned in either direction it flattens the battery very quickly and engine cuts out. also engine management light is on. are these problems related and is it as i suspect , the alternator.
when starting it with jump leads it runs fine until the jump leads are removed , then it cuts out. it is a brand new battery.
any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated

It does sound like the alternator but difficult to say with any degree of certainty - if the engine management light is on then the car has identified that there is a problem - the next step is to figure out what fault code has been generated and then find out what that fault code means.
There is a 'pedal trick' that you can do to some Vauxhall cars - this is a DIY way to find what fault code has been generated - if you Google "Vauxhall pedal trick" then you should be able to find out more about it.
