Cancelling Gym Membership

Hi,
I joined a gym and signed a 12 month contract, which ends in March. I rang the gym just now to see what I'd need to take with me to cancel my membership. This is because I'm now a student nurse and really can't afford to pay gym costs.
I was told that they need 3 months notice to cancel membership and that's I'd have to pay for three months full membership costs until the cancellation period was over. But my 12 month contract ends next month anyway?!
What do I have to pay? Am I right in thinking that as my contract ends next month I only have to pay next months fees and then that's it? Or do I have to pay for another 3 months even though that runs past my end of contract?
I'm a bit worried about this, like I said, I'm a student and really can't afford to give them £90! Hence why I was cancelling in the first place.
Please help, any advice is appreciated.
Amy.

what does your contract say0

Amy, what does it say in your contract?
If it says you need to give three months notice of termination, then I think they are right.0 -
To be honest I don't know (which is my own fault for now reading the contract properly before I signed up). I think what I'll do is go in today with my letter saying I want to cancel, but also ask for a copy of my contract to read through. If it says 3 months I guess I'll have to find some way to pay

I bet its Bannatynes...in which case they do have a 3 month membership cancellation policy which I happen to think is unreasonable and excessive"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Thats why Bannatynes has lots of cash

Yeah, if you are on a 12 month contract with 3 months notice, you can end it after a year but to do so notice needs to be given at 9 months, if you see what I mean.0

You are not on a 12-month contract, you are on a minimum contract of 12 months, slightly different.
If you read the T&C you will see that you can give 3 months notice at any point from 9 months (if not, then it is an illegal contract), therefore cancelling from 12 months+
You will have to put up with it im afraid. Yes, it is your responsibility to check your contract properly and this is how Bannatynes etc make their money, from peoples lack of interest in what they are signing. You do have rights......but you still need common sense.0
