Carpet on stairs, vinyl on landing - how would it work?

We want vinyl flooring on the landing but carpet on the stairs. Our stairs run straight up (no bends) then the landing is on the right to the stairs (theres a wall right in front of the top of the stairs, you turn right into the landing and bathroom)
If we have different flooring on the stairs to the landing, where does the join go. With carpet on stairs only, where does it end? I was originally wanting just the floor boards upstairs with carpet up the stairs but dont know how this would work with the edge of the carpet?
Im worried about an unsightly edge of vinyl at the top of the stairs or one of those threshold strips (ugh)
whats the best to do?
