  • I use a DNS-323, which takes 2 drives, and the drives can be used either independently or mirror each other.

I have had the DNS-323 for about 9 months and cannot fault it.

    Worth considering.

I too use a DNS-323 and for my needs it is perfect but it sounds to me that all the op wants is a cheap no frills NAS as he has said he doesn't want RAID-1. A simple NAS box can be had for £40-£50 on eBay and my DNS-323 was over £100 - presumably because of the RAID support

I had a Buffalo NAS device a while back for using on the network. It worked fine for a long while then started to act up. No probs I thought, take the drive out, put it in my desktop and then recover the data.

    Nope.

The NAS formats the drive in it's own format and therefore if it fails, you cannot simply remove the drive and put it in your desktop to get the data.

Read up about this on any prospective NAS device you use.

I have now bought a Belkin N+ Router with USB. I have a 1TB USB drive plugged into it and it works fine with the laptops in the house. I can unplug it, plug it directly into a laptop and read the data no probs.

    Worth bearing in mind.
