PC World and Epson SX115

Options
Last month my old Epson printer went on the blink and I was advised that replacement would be better than repair.

So I headed to PC World - where I found the SX115 All-in-One at £49.99 which I accepted as a matching replacement for my old machine.

(As an aside, it isn't the best machine in the world, but it's fairly cheap, and works well enough. It is quite noisy and this model is EXTREMELY slow - takes something like 15-20 seconds to print a single sheet of print.)

Anyway......the following week I went into Asda and lo and behold, there was exactly the same machine (piles of them!!) at £35.00.

I'd be strongly inclined to recommend searching round supermarkets for such items rather than going to the 'specialist' stores.
Places like PC World are awkward to deal with when it comes to problems - while Asda, so long as you have the original box and receipt, will replace pretty well anything (there are exceptions....) without question.

My local Asda have these for £33 but after reading reviews I decided against this SX115 model for the reasons you stated.

A few weeks ago Asda had the SX215 for £47 but this has now gone up to £59-99.
Like you say it pays to shop around.

USB printer cable can be got from Poundland for
    100pence.

Did you get them to price match? They do it up to 7 days from purchase.

You say that, but we had a load of old Belkin USB cables lying about at ours. Double pack for 97p....bargain.

My tip for buying a printer is to think about whether you really need a colour printer. I have had 2 or 3 cheap colour printers over the last 10 years, and hated having to shell out so much for new ink cartridges. Then it occurred to me that I rarely need the colour. Almost everything I print is letters or copies of documents for work.

So instead, I bought a fantastic value Brother laser printer HL-2035 from Ryman's for about £50. It's fast and incredibly economical, as well as offering top quality results. I've not had to replace the cartridge yet but when I do, it will be much cheaper than colour.

I'm not necessarily promoting this brand (it's probably been replced now). But do ask yourself how vital it is to have all-in-one features like scanner, and particularly whether you really need colour printing. If these aren't essential, you can save a packet and get much higher quality printing into the bargain.

As for PC World, I do occasionally buy things from them, but for standard items like cables and various accessories I will generally go to Maplin's, or online, e-Bay or Amazon.

Thanks for all your thoughts and comments. Glad to see that you lot do your homework before spending your money.:)

I have to be honest and say that I didn't really shop around - but my dear old mum was paying so I wasn't too worried.

But it did actually surprise me to find Asda selling such things. I'd really only got them labelled as for accessories and such.

The other reason I didn't shop around was because I'd bought several packs of Epson ink - and I was damned if I was going to waste the £40 I'd spent.

I've got caught in a Catch 22 situation.....

    PS
The SX 215 is only different in that you can plug in your camera or memory card to see, edit and print photos.
Disadvantage - you can't save the photos via the printer to your pc.
    That's stupid:(

More recently PCWorld has been more competitive on price, but only for certain products, obviously you've got to shop around, same with buying anything.

A quick search of the product name on google should do it in future!

It would be if they actually made a SX115 WIRELESS.
