Lining paper on walls to be painted???

it makes no difference what so ever, The reason for hanging horizntally is when you repaper over the top of it you dont have the seems in the same place, however linning paper is wider than normal paper anyway so your seems should never be in the same place, Other pro's I am sure, would argue the matter with me but I have never had a problem.:: No Unapproved or advertising links in signatures please - FM ::0

On relatively recent properties, it probably doesn't matter too much. But on a 400 year old place, with lots of difficult to stabilise lime-wash on the walls - you have to put it on horizontally, if you're papering over it. Otherwise the final paper will tend to pull the lining paper away, as the paste dries, where the 2 lots of joints are close.
It's surprisingly easy to put on horizontally. Bit like doing a sideways ceiling;) The only difficulty is when working on the upper part of the wall, you need trestles / boards. Or 2 sets of steps and the OH to move them as you carefully progress!
But - as DavetheDecorator - if your walls are poor to start with, lining / painting will probably only exaggerate the faults. You have to get rid of most of the imperfections first. And getting perfect butt joints on lining paper is not easy. I find aiming for a 1mm gap - then filling / lightly sanding that first before painting, is a fairly laborious way. But better than the problem you get if the lining paper starts to overlap? As it's not machined / stored as meticulously as wallpaper, and the edges wander a bit.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
hiya
I have used both methods in my house Pros and cons for both
Lining walls looks great and is a less dusty alternative to getting smooth finish ( all that sanding will throw up LOADS of dust!) but dont forget that it is wallpaper and it can lift in time or get peeled off by little fingers (even though the dont own up to it!) A good tip i was given was to leave a slight gap (about 1mm) between paper which you then fill with a little polyfilla and give a quick light sand to when dry-once painted you dont get any seams, boring work but worth it! In the rooms i have had plastered/skimmed the paper peeling fairy is obviously not an issue and if you get a knock/scrape in plaster can be filled with polyfilla and repainted easy peasy! Also my plasterer 'polished' the plaster so that it was ultra smooth. Basically if the room is not being reskimmed and there seems to be a lot of uneven lumps and bumps go with the lining paper and if you have kids make them wear mittens!
ps. matt paint touches up a lot better than satin or silk
hope this helps0 -
