Looking for new car but stuck for what to go for

Hello all.

I'm looking to get a new car (new to me, not necessarily new) as we don't think my car has much life left in it.

I am looking at at budget of £6000 - but not sure what to look at. At the moment it is just my husband and I, but we are trying for a family and I do want something of a resonable size.

Some of my thoughts were:
  • Ford Focus
  • Honda Civic (although my dad said earlier that they were talking about a problem with Civics a short while agon on BBC's One Show - although helpfully he can't remember what the problem was, so will have to look into that)
  • VW Golf - although for my budget, will probably be quite an old one

My current car is an old, tiny tin car and a very basic model. So I do really want something spacious (but not an estate!), solid and safe with a few modern bits (like electric windows!).

Anyway, does anyone have any advice?

Since you include this one I will suggest a Skoda Octavia. Based on the same platform, and uses the same engines. You'll get a little more for your money IMO and the only real benefit you get from the VW on top is the badge (to show all your mates/neighbours) and potential small reduction in depreciation. (Remember the Skoda will have plenty of VW/OOOO logos under the bonnet, show your mates those ;))

    Ford Focus .

I think its the most popular family car , ask yourself why .... its good.
Plenty of second hand ones available.
  • yep, focus. Cheap, relatively reliable, cheap parts and good at just being ...good.

Octavia is a good shout too. To me, golfs make more sense when newer as they hold value better, as you say for 6k you will be looking at an older car.

    id go for the honda

    bullet proof engines and gearboxes
  • i'd go for the octavia, 2.0T good power good room lots of extra's.
  • Visibility was the thing that got panned in the Civic and I could understand it. For £6k I'd say any of the above are good- take a scout round and see what appeals. That usually makes the decision.

Focus imo - you're looking at much newer, lower mileage cars than any VAG.
