Can I save money on Virgin calls?

I've read the article on the main site but am still unsure as to whether I can save money using an over-ride number so looking for advice from practical experiences.

For my Virgin telephone line I pay £7something a month for unlimited calls to geographic numbers. I have good free deals on mobiles so never call mobiles from the landline except in unusual circumstances.

I've come to realise that during the working day I mainly tend to phone business numbers i.e 0845/0870 and so am probably wasting the extra I pay as these aren't included.

Our main calling is done on an evening to landlines for some times lenghty periods.

I'm considering going back to basics with Virgin(weekend only free) and using an over-ride number.
Does any Virgin user have advice?

If you're calling 0845 and 0870 numbers weekday daytime, the obvious choice is a BT landline and BT's Unlimited Anytime Plan (£11.54 + £4.99 per month). 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 calls of up to 60 minutes each included.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks for the obvious suggestion but I want to stay with Virgin for my broadband and TV as I've negotiated some good deals for these as a long term customer -orinally with NTL. I used to have a BT line when I first moved into the house but this was physically removed some years ago (for various reasons) so I would be looking at a a complete reinstallation of a BT line and finding new broadband and TV at new prices

    Or just the former.

Move your voice telephony and leave your broadband and TV where it is.

  • You could always use http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php via their 0808 Freephone Number for mobile and non geographical calls, and reduce your VM call bundle to Evenings and Weekends only.

Unfortunately (as far as I understand) the best prices for Virgin TV + Broadband are dependant on taking telephone line rental from them

Thats what I was thinking of doing except I was going to revert to free weekend Geographic (current main use) and use an over-ride for all other geographic and non geographic calls during the week. However the main site article didn't seem( to me) to make it very clear as to whether Virgin call prices are significantly undercut. Hence the question posed seeking someone with Virgin who uses an over-ride

  • Or alternatively in the short-term you could visit 'saynoto0870' and get the geographic numbers for your 0845 and 0870 numbers.

Thats exactly what l do, its amazing how much money you can save using that site.

I have actually taken the step of ditching VM's phone service, while maintaining the TV & Broadband. We use Skype via the router (dual phone) and pay just £3.39 per month (Europe Subscription) this includes phone number, voice mail etc etc Also for those who understand about Skype, the last time l brought credit for SkypeOut was in August 2008 and we still have credit

£3.39 a month compared to Virgins rates means we save a fair amount over the year. This also means we make use of the included minutes we have on our mobiles which we didn't use to do.

I persoanlly feel we are stuck in our ways, by this l mean we feel having a landline is a must, well theses days its just not the case.
