Cheap accommodation in Dublin next month

Evening all.
Does anyone out there have any advice about this - I'm thinking about spending a month in Dublin (next month - August); can it be done on a shoestring, but one which doesn't involve sharing a room with a stranger in a hostel? I've checked out a couple of hostels with private rooms and they're already showing as booked up... what about renting a room in a house, or a long-term b&b? I'll essentially be on a student budget, but without student discount...
And, if anyone has any other advice about living or travelling cheaply (I'll be going from the UK)? I may be working in the city centre (Dublin 1)...
Fingers crossed!

When I went, I went to Egan's House. I don't know what your budget is, but it cost us £20-odd pounds a night, with breakfast, and it was lovely!

    As there's no underground, Dublinbus,

    DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit)

    and the tram system

are the main ways of travelling around Dublin. They are cheap and there are special season tickets for visitors.

    Hi Bruney

I used to live in Dublin [fab city] but the words 'Dublin' and 'cheap' are very rarely used in the same sentence and with with good reason too – namely that Dublin is far from cheap, and especially not in August seeing as how it's right in the middle of the tourist season. That said, depending on what you class as 'cheap' there are always options, although all of the cheaper accommodation gets booked up weeks if not months in advance.

Someone's already given you the Luas link... the Luas is fairly reasonably priced and very easy to use so look for accommodation further from the City Centre but on the Luas line. In terrms of where to stay, the Green Line [see link] is far more desirable [apologies to anyone living on the red one!] particularly from the Centre out as far as Dundrum...

    http://www.luas.ie/document/index.asp?head=1

Bear in mind that the last Luas from the City Centre runs at around 11:00pm so if you were spending a 'night on the tiles', you'd need to get Dublin Bus' Nitelink service home...

Alternatively, have you considered Dun Laoghaire? It's on the DART line and is not hugely far from the City?

Another option, although at approx £40 per night, it's not the cheapest, is to make use of Trinity College's visitor accommodation [see link below] which is right in the Centre [Dublin 2 – a quick aside: all uneven codes, e.g., Dublin 1, 3, 5 etc are North of the river, and all even codes are South of the river. As a general rule, the South is more desirable and has better transport links... Dublin 2 is considered the 'Centre' and it takes in Grafton Street, St Stephen's Green, Trinity College and Temple Bar]

That's it for now... Gotta do some work – will check back later, poss with more info!

As Briona said, Dublin is really expensive. If you want a good drink, avoid the city as it's very expensive. €5 a shot, see ya later! Lol.

Go to Powerscourt waterfall, that's a great spot and only €5 in. Well worth the visit, and you'll see Johnnie Fox's pub on the way up. Although that place is a rip off so be careful.

I visit Dublin at least twice a month, I always stay in Swords, so although not as clued up as Briona, if I can help i'll try! :)

edit: There is another Dublin post in this forum i've posted loads of info in, I can't find it right now so have a search, there's a fair bit of info in there from forum members. :)
