why are people complaining about cost of all electric homes?
Options
All you ever get on here are people who have no gas complaining about how much they are paying per month for electricity.
SO! They moan that they are paying £100 per month for electricity and paying £400 a quarter in the middle of winter for electricity.
So what? They are paying £1200 a year for electricity.
Well I am paying £1200 per year as well. In fact my last bill was £394 from Oct 2009 to Jan 2010.
The only difference is I have gas heating and use electricity for everything else.
So put it in pespective, you pay £1200 for electricity only, I pay £1200 for gas and electricity. So what are you moaning about?
Gas might be cheaper per killowatt than electricity but if you work it all out you still end up paying the same whether it is gas or electricity.
perhaps I should have posted this in Praise, Vent & Warnings.

stan, you don't say what proportion of your £394 bill is gas, but if it is for heating, it may well be £300 gas and £100 electricity.
If that was the case and you needed that amount of heat from your heating system, you do realise it would have cost you around £900 if it was provided by electricity.
So your £394 bill would have been £1000.
£1200 per year would be £3000.
Maybe cause to join the moaners?0 -
Now this is something that has been puzzling me for a while. I am constantly seeing on here how expensive it is to heat using electricity. Yet I am in a 3 bed semi all electric house heating on 24/7 and using so far this year an average of 58 units a day in total for everything. My estimated annual bill will be around 13000 units and come in at less than £1000. From what I've seen gas kwh may cost less but you all seem to use a whole lot more of them than I use electric to heat with.
agreeing with you st9990 -
I ain't complaining. Two air source heat pumps in a 3 bed detached bungalow (all electric) total electric bill for 12 months = £300 + £90 on coal for my multifuel stove. My last place (3 bed semi) cost me 4 times that with storage heaters + coal0

I use gas to heat my home and have a combined gas + electric bill of £14 per month (after cashback based on real KWh numbers)
My boss is all electric and recently had a £1200 bill for 6 months electric + electric heating... go figure0 -

You don't seriously think that the majority of people with gas heating actually leave it on 24/7 do you? It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -

The efficiency of gas boilers ranges from approx 60% to 90%. So if we assume the average is 75% then Mr and Mrs Average using 20,000kWh get the same amount of heat as electrical heating produces using 15,000kWh.
I am pretty certain that the average property with gas CH is bigger than those with normal(not storage) electrical heating.
I suspect also that there is a tendency for those with electrical heating to switch the heaters off when leaving a room for a period, where I doubt the majority with gas CH switch off radiators as they leave a room for an hour or so.0 -

nah, but I do have other apartments above, below and on 2 of 4 sides that keep me nice and warm without needing to use my heating
(it is actually on but the temp never drops low enough to hit my thermostat 95% of the time)0
