Stupid some will say, but I prefer to have my car insurance 'any driver'
It annoys me that the online quotation systems do not allow a quote for that choice, but only for sole or named drivers. Grr grr a thousand times grr.

The problem with getting "any driver" cover is that you still have to disclose the convictions and so forth for any drivers you know will drive. The online quotation systems also don't cope with an infinite number of drivers, because it's simply too complicated for them to do so.
The quotation systems are designed to meet the needs of most potential customers - I bet that less than 5% of private customers opt for "any driver" nowadays.0 -
Whilst it would be possible to design a web front end that was capable of handling any driver policies it wouldnt be a cost effective investment. I would say Mark's estimate of 5% is rather high, I know the last time I looked at our book it was less than 1% but I suspect a higher number of people with much older policies/ broker customers may still have it (ie the people that arent going to be switching insurers)
Secondly, any driver policies are much more expensive, generally, and web customers are even more price sensitive than phone customers and so any driver doesnt really stack up on the financialsAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Thanks for replies. isee the logic. I have any driver because at late middle / early old age I want any competent driver to be able to take over if I am unwell.
Silly probably in eyes of some younger and fitter folk.0 -
The other consideration for most people is that a policyholder always used to have "driving other cars" so they could drive anyone elses vehicle on a Third Party basis as long as they have the owners consent - this doesnt apply to named drivers and also some insurers have now stopped DOC but I seem to remember we have discussed this previouslyAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I don't think your approach is silly at all - it's far better and more sensible than relying on other drivers who might have to drive your car relying on their (third party only) "driving other cars" extension or, indeed, do so without insurance.
I'm sure it gives you some peace of mind - which is after all the point of insurance.
I wish my parents would understand your logic - my Dad has a car which my mother cannot drive, and yet they go away on holidays in his car rather than hers. (She has an automatic only licence and a (brand new) automatic car; he has a manual car). They can't see that, if anything happens to him, they will both be stranded. She's obsessed that she musn't get a big mileage on her car - but sold her last one with 30k on the clock. D'oh!0 -

This isn't the case, the any driver policies assume the worst (ie that named drivers have all had DD10s and are all mechanics, and 50 claims), which is why it is so dear.
Most places will do them, but only over the age of 25.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
