In my opinion the difference between a builder and a Handyman are thus,a builder usually turns up in a transit van, half smoken ciggie in his mouth,a stub of a pencil behind his ear,and an uncanny knack of being able to blow air through his teeth when you ask him a question.

A Handyman is usually well Ard!!! or Blind...Naughty me.

I had a look at the photos. That's all truly shocking work.

Doesn't even come up to the standard of bad DIY!

The shed isn't made from 'breeze blocks' though - those are concrete blocks.

Breeze blocks (or aircrete blocks) are a different thing altogether.

The guy who rectified the work was like the person you describe as being a Handyman!

I think there are two parts to this question...

    1. Was this person asked to do this work as a builder or a handyman?
    2. Was the work carried out to the standard of what he was engaged as?

    1. If you knew about this guy through doing some plumbing work for you and he said he could do building work too, then I'd lean towards him being a handyman - i.e. a jack of all trades, master of none.
If you've got anything where he has described himself as a builder, however, then that would change things.

    2. I have no idea whether the standard of work was good enough for a handyman. However, if people are agreeing that they wouldn't get a handyman in to do these jobs then I'm not sure this has far to go.

Quite possibly a borderline case. If I were you I would think carefully before spending serious money on an appeal.

Sadly I did not ask him at outset what he was. I just took it that if he said he could do work then he was capable of doing a good job i.e roof not blowing off, fireplace not catching fire and tiles remaining in situ.

I do not think by any stretch of imagination could anyone say that adhered to any "accepted" standards

I know now, much to my regret, that he was not a master of any trade and I would not even consider him to be a "Jack of All" trades
