Bidder Asking If I Accept Cheques?

Hi

I have received an enquiry from a possible bidder asking if I accept cheques?

I have read through the threads on here but am still a little confused about how safe they are to accept. Am I right in saying it takes 6 days to clear? Am I totally protected then and the bank can't claim fraud etc weeks later? Also I was worried about then only having 1 day left to post the item to be eligible for PayPal Seller Protection. Does the 7 day posting rules follow 24hour clock or working days? How would I know what actual time cheque cleared and what if it was on a saturday and I am unable to post the next day?

Please can someone confirm the best guidelines to follow for accepting cheques.

Thanks

PayPal seller protection is not applicable to Cheque's. Plus you have 7 days to post anyway...

Personally I don't accept cheques as its hard for me to get to a bank. Paypal Seller protection doesn't apply as your not using payypal once the money has cleared into your account there is not much anyone can do. Although there have been reports of ebay refund buyers for small amounts for non paypal sales and then billing the seller.
  • I never accept cheques. I always say PAYPAL ONLY AUCTION in my listings. If the item is very big/heavy I will add CASH ON COLLECTION.

If you do get a cheque (if you are happy with them) then you MUST wait for it to clear prior to dispatch. Let them know this if they ask to pay by cheque, stating that the delivery time is dependent upon this.

    Personally, I'd say no.

Ooops sorry I knew it didn't sound quiet right. Of course I wouldn't have pp protection because he's not paying with it...:o

Luckily I can get to the bank most days, so If I say yes what is the normal timeframe to give him till he receives the item.

    Thanks again
  • Timeframe depends on the bank really. I believe it can take between 5-10 days for cheques to clear. Been a few year since I used one so you may need to double 'cheque' with your bank.

As long as the buyer is aware of this and has been told, then it shouldn't be a problem.

Now it is the 2-4-6 system so after 6 working days the money is absolutely safe. If a bank finds after this time that there is something fraudulent they take the loss.

Thanks that's good to know, so I should be okay to accept then as long as its cleared after 6 days.

Thanks everyone for there useful feedback :)

That's working days, and the day you pay it in is day zero, so it takes about a week and half to clear.

I don't get cheques any more but when people have asked in the past I do get nervous as they won't remember that they have paid by cheque and will still expect their stuff in a couple of days, and when they don't get it their fingers itch over the low stars button.

Oh gawd forgot about the despatch feedback, and too late now as I've told him about 10 days to clear before posting. Hopefully this person doesn't win the bid lol x

With Barclays it shows as cleared funds in your account 4 working days after paying in but it can still "bounce" for another 2 working days, after that time the bank takes the loss if there is one. Paying in today 26/02, cleared funds next thursday 04/03, yours for sure the following tuesday 09/03
