Tips wanted on stripping metal gates & repainting

We're trying to get the old paint off a pair of metal gates, they're currently yellow and green and we want to repaint them black with a dull bronze top bit. Don't suppose there's anywhere they can be dipped (like they do with wood?) Any suggestions (as long as they're not crazy ones from nelly) would be very appreciated.

Sor far tried:

White Spirits - Wire brush - turps - a scraper - brillo pad:o some of the flaky bits have come off but that's about all. Oh, and do you need to use primer before you put top coat on like you do with wood?

there are places that can dip..but id suggest you call a sandblaster, my local guy would charge about £10 cash for a decent sized gate

that will remove all rust and paint and leave it like brand new ready for paint

wouldnt sand blasting cause a lot a mess ?

I only ask as well have a long fence that will need repainting at some point but it couldnt be taken away to be dipped so whatever is to be used would have to be done on site ....

you could burn it off with a gas torch but depends how much time / effort you want to put into it, 2 cans of gas should be more than enough.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

You could wait til September then phone your local construction college. Ask if they want gates for the P&D students to practice on!

The P&D dept at DH's work asked staff if anyone had gates that needed doing for the students to do. (they got inundated tho and wont be asking again for quite some time, lol!!)

Surely the easiest way would be to remove loose paint with wire wool or stiff brush. use primer/undercoat and then paint your favourite paint. For any rust you can get Hammerite rust remover that can turn rust back into black metal. Also Hammerite smooth paint is very good and quick drying. I sue it our our wrought iron fencing/gates every 2 years I paint them or patch them up.

I use primer on bare metal but if its just paintwork use undercoat.

The gates aren't fitted so there's no problem there. Thanks for that.

I was charged £12 for the dipping and striping of a lovely old metal bench. It had layers and layers of shades of white. Now it's black. £12 well spent and collected it the next day too!

One of my bil's is a painter and decorator and say's s hould be plenty of 'caustic dippers' in most localities. If metal is not too bad then use wire brush attachment on drill then a good paint such as Hammerite. Also says that many of these 'strippers' will also prime and paint your gates!
