Adding external insulation to a already filled cavity wall?

Hi all,

Im reading HIPS at the moment and am wondering how accurate they are and how to find out more information on the relative efficiency of different insulation activities.

For example my current question is:

If i have a already filled Cavity wall (for say 250 quid) what benefit would there be in adding external insulation (in addition to filled cavity) and what would the typical costs be? for parts only, and for labour

My wife's father believes its a worthwhile thing to do.. but i think, and the hip thinks that doing so would add only a few more points on the EPC score... as the house already reaped the initial benefit of cavity wall insulation.

Im having difficulty finding any direct comparison or discussion surrounding someone filling cavity wall AND adding an external insulation layer (and rendered outside of building).

I'd rather not do this as 1. its a big job, 2 its prob cost a lot of money, 3. the money would only be recouped after say 10-20 years. but need evidence... otherwise FIL keeps banging on about how he will help.... when he jsut dismisses HIP as inaccurate...

bit annoying

Sounds more like your FIL wants to help you then you need external insulation.

Could you ask FIL to get the quotes, be there when companies want to quote. Then give him lists of questions to ring round asking companies, getting prices of materials etc?

some random thoughts, would ext ins need any form of permission? frombuilding control / planning dept.

if rendering is needed afterwards it will change the look of your house, will this be in keeping with the neighbour - or is it going to be like stone cladding on a mid terrace?

I filled in a council questionairre a couple of years ago as my house has lots of insulation and far more than necessary I was interested to get feedback - I didn't get a 'your house is well insulated' I just got a list of recommendations of further improvements I could do, all of them many £'000's and in my opinion would never recoup the outlay.

If this is the EPC part of your HIP then no action is necessary as it is only for guidance (thanks to European Bureaucrats).
