Quarry tile floor

Hi,
We are having a new kitchen installed next month. We decided not to have new flooring because we wanted to stick within our budget and also our current floor is not damaged or anything, just needs tarting up, really. It's laid with fairly ordinary quarry tiles, the terracotta ones. I don't know how long they've been there.....I should think 1980s. We like them but I think they probably need re-sealing. When the workmen have finished, I intend to give them a good scrub with soapy water, but not sure how to reseal them. Is there a product for this? Has anyone tried doing this & can recommend anything? Would welcome any tips.
2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

No product to recommend you, just make sure it soaks in, rather than says on the surface. Think a tile shop like topps may be able to help.

There's some really good advice on this site, but from when we had them I know they were prone to damp problems so in the end we took them up and laid a new damproof membrane, then a new floor and put someFlotex carpet down.

Buy giving them a clean with soapy water you wont actually life the dirt or grease.
The best product for quarry tiles is lithofin. You can get a proper cleaning product and then you can treat and seal after. I'm not sure if topps sell this as they only sell a basic quarry tile. But you could try fired earth stores who themselves sell quarry and terracotta tiles.

Thanks for that. Ours don't seem to be damp despite being in 1930s house and having had quite a few floods in the kitchen due to the dodgy plumbing we inherited. Will try Topps & Fired Earth as suggested. Had never heard of Lithofin. Thanks.

  • Hi,

the best sealer available is "Stain proof" .it is good for 15 years so there is no need to re seal the floor every year.It is more expensive than the usual sealers but it is long term sulution.I have bought mine from aj flooring in Leeds for £41 (1 litre) I know that they deliver becuase they have sent a few litres to my pal in London
