hi, my friend has always been on prepayment meters for gas and electric. she switched to eon 3 monthe ago and now has received a bill from npower for £181.32 to be paid immediately. she phoned them to ask why she had this bill and was told that the increase in electricity was not picked up via her electric key when inserted.
to my mind this is their fault. surely they must have noticed that she was getting in debt slowly via the meter and rectified the problem.

Hi pcboo - Yes your friend does have to pay for used, but she is entitled to a detailed bill listing the periods the power was used and the tariff charges at those times, so she can check her meter readings
Also as the problem was with the Key or the Meter, neither of which could she have known about or were her fault, she is entitled to neqotiate a period over which to pay off the debt.
She should write to n'power requsting a proper bill, also saying she is prepared to pay off the debt by installments once she has had the bill and verified it

In most cases such prepayment bills should be capped at £70. She can continue to negotiate until she receives at least this concession.
