How can I waterproof the base of this vase?

Bought a lovely ceramic vase from a charity shop which I've been using to display dried grasses so I never put water in it.
Have used it for fresh flowers for the first time and discover a small quantity of water is seeping through the base. (Probably the reason why it was given to the charity shop :rotfl: )

Can anybody suggest a cheap substance I can use to seal the base to stop this happening? (The vase only cost £1 so I don't want to have to spend a tenner on sealing it)

epoxy resin will do it but its expensive unless you have some laying around.
try varnish or even hair laquer might do it.

I would be tempted to do the inside of it.

Line it with a plastic bag before you put the water in it. Be sure that the plastic bag has no holes in it, of course!

I think that is the only real solution - it could be that if it is low fired earthenware (which is porous anyway but generally sealed with a fired on glaze, which is essentially a layer of glass) that the inside is not fully glazed, or that the glaze is damaged or crazed. Even if you seal the base of the pot, the body of it will still become saturated, and it will come out somewhere sooner or later!

Maybe a plastic container, like a plastic tall glas, a yogurt pot, or one of those tubs things like soup sometimes come in would fit snugly?

If it has a hairline crack in it you could try sealing it with super glue or clear nail varnish might do the trick. But the plastic bag idea I mentioned earlier is simplest I think.

Non water based paint like hammerite should seal it, or pour some yacht varnish in and swill it around and pour out the excess. Porcelain sealant should also work.

Silicone mastic (like you have round the bath) should work.
