Jewellers have my ring... and now closed! what do i do??

Options
My fiancee gave our local jewellery shop her white gold diamond engagement ring to be fixed about 3 weeks ago, was given a receipt slip and told they would call her in about 10 days or so to tell her when it would be ready to pick up.

Anyway, these last couple of weeks we have been to the jewellers and they have been closed, no one is answering the phone, we've left messages but still not heard anything from them.

We're getting very worried now, as you can imagine; the ring cost over £1000 and obviously we want it back.

It is an independent jewellery shop so is not part of a chain, and has been in our town for a few years now and has a good reputation, there is no sign on the shop anywhere to say why they are closed so we're at a loss as what to do now????

It might be nothing suspicious and maybe a good reason, the owner could be ill, on holiday or even had a death in the family but it would be nice to have been informed regardless. My fiancee is really upset at not having her ring and so am i. What can we do now?

Any help or advice would be most welcome

thanks

I would ask some of the neighbouring shops.

Asking some of the neighbouring shops is a good idea. Local business owners often know their neighbours pretty well and they'll probably know what's up.
  • If you Google the jewellers, do they have a website and a contact email address? Is there a notice at all in the window giving contact details?

Worst comes to the worst, it's probably covered by the house insurance, and they will make a few enquiries for you.

House insurance will probably cover it up to a certain amount but if it is worth £1000 then it may have needed to be a specified item (my engagement ring is noted on my policy as the value wouldn't be covered as a single item for loss/theft). Also if it was a recent purchase on a credit card, then maybe the credit card company could help?
  • Go find the jeweller. Official methods will likely not help. You need to persuade the jeweller to give it back. At his front door, he might just do that.
